Joy Williams ha iniziato come cantante pop cristiana, ma si è allontata dalla musica notoriamente religiosa come parte del duo country-folk The Civil Wars. Pur cantando canzoni essenzialmente secolari sull’amore, inserisce nei suoi testi riferimenti alla fede e icone del cristianesimo.
